About Wolfgang Tillmans

View Profile »

Wolfgang Tillmans (German, b. 1968) is a contemporary photographer living and working in London and Berlin. Tillmans studied at the Bournemouth and Poole College of Art and Design in Bournemouth, United Kingdom, where he developed his documentary-styled photography. Tillmans was deeply affected by the AIDS pandemic, and his casual, family-photo style shots of important gay figures in the art world have appeared on the covers of magazines throughout the world. Tillmans’ more recent work has shifted towards Abstract Expressionism as the artist exploits the mistakes made in the development process.
