About Will Cotton

View Profile »

Will Cotton (American, b. 1965) is a painter known for his landscapes created out of sweets and the placement of nude women with cookies and candies. Through his images, Cotton plays with what viewers consider to be objects of desire, at times placing them in unexpected contexts. Of his inspiration, Cotton has said “I was initially drawn to the Hudson River School when I learned that many of the paintings were made specifically to incite a feeling of awe and a desire to experience the new frontier. This struck me as a particularly American kind of propagandist message that I wanted to reference in my paintings. I love the idea of showing ... what it might be like to experience such a place.” In 2004, Cotton received the Princess Grace Foundation Award for Contemporary Art in Monaco. In addition, the Katy Perry music video “California Gurls” was based upon Cotton’s delectably imaginative images. His works have been exhibited internationally.
