Description

In Cavafy of Alexandria, Timothy Hull uses raised texture and bright geometric shapes to reimagine scenes from our Hellenistic past. Frequently inspired by the letters of ancient Latin and Greek, Hull’s practice stems from a commitment to unifying art and scholarship, where “it is essential to [him] that the art interest the viewer in history, and not necessarily that history interest the viewer in art.” Birthed from a practice of fusing light humor, soft blue tones, and text to create a simple unity, Cavafy of Alexandria beautifully evokes the journeys of epic heroes, while simultaneously recasting that literary framework to “offer an open field for interpretation and imagination.”

According to the artist, he is committed to “the task of unifying art and scholarship, and to finding innovative ways of using art to construct histories that are evocative and meditative as well as instructive and compelling. However, it is essential to me that the art interests the viewer in history, and not necessarily that history interest the viewer in art. I find that the letters of ancient Latin and Greek, insouciantly scribbled on a wall thousands of years ago, offer an open field for interpretation and imagination.”

Hull prompts us to remember the classics, reviving an imaginative interest in dialectic. If dialectic today cannot be revived through reading The Iliad or The Odyssey, then it can through Hull’s painterly canonical motifs. Hull lives and works in Brooklyn and has multiple solo exhibitions in NY.
