About Ruth Orkin

View Profile »

Growing up in Hollywood in the 1920s and 1930s, Ruth Orkin (American, 1921 – 1985) had a natural affinity for celebrity culture. In 1939, Orkin cycled and hitchhiked her way from Los Angeles to New York City to see the World’s Fair. She moved to New York four years later, where she would meet her future husband, the photographer and filmmaker Morris Engel with whom she co-directed the 1953 film “Little Fugitive”. Throughout her significant career, Orkin captured the faces of Lauren Bacall, Marlon Brando and Alfred Hitchcock, alongside the people and spaces of New York.
