About Robert Motherwell

View Profile »

Robert Motherwell (American, 1915- 1991) was one of the youngest members of the New York School. Like many of his colleagues of the Abstract Expressionist generation, Motherwell remained devoted to recognizable imagery, to the expressive potential of calligraphic marks and to subject matter of a literary and political nature. Motherwell earned his bachelors from Stanford and a PhD from Harvard. He was previously married to fellow artist Helen Frankenthaler until 1971.
