To create reflectingpool_grey and other similar works, Petra Cortright used Photoshop to explore the expressive brushwork associated with oil and acrylic painting. The imagery is often pulled from online sources to create complex visual webs that might include anything from Emojis to painted flowers. reflectingpool_grey offers a humorous, digital take on the Narcissus myth. Although this flag does not show the artist herself, its combination of painterly marks records her presence as maker in absentia. The final digital work is created by transposing this composition of disparate references onto a polyester flag.
