As her backdrop, Orly Maiberg uses the Sea of Galilee, a site that holds great religious, cultural and national importance, but also serves as a recreational mecca. Depicted in these scenes is an annual sporting event: the crossing of the Kinneret Lake, known in Hebrew as ha'tzlicha. The artist herself has participated in the occasion, and in focusing on this subject, she believes to have discovered many implications of her people’s collective experience: both past and present. The narrative takes on motifs of Jewish history: defeat, escape, and exile in search of a safe haven.
