About Marcel Dzama

View Profile »

Though best recognized for his whimsical drawings, Marcel Dzama (Canadian, b. 1974) actively engages across mediums, producing sculpture, film, puppets, and dioramas as well. Receiving his BFA from the University of Manitoba in 1997, Dzama has since created fanciful worlds of hybridized animals, dancing figures, and popular iconography in muted colors and simple draftsmanship. Much like the Dadaists that inspire him, Dzama pokes fun at culturally relevant figures and practices in a distinct manner that has been fondly described as both “oddly erotic and calmly macabre.” Having achieved an undeniable cult following, his work has been acquired by numerous well-respected institutions, including the Andy Warhol Foundation as well as the private collections of Spike Jonze, Brad Pitt, and Gus Van Sandt.
