Lorraine Cleary Dale's artwork is about process, she works intuitively as she builds layers of color, repetitive shapes, and marks. She thinks about the concepts of time, cycles, interconnectedness, and chance. The act of painting becomes a meditative solitary act, a time to contemplate, to mirror beauty, and to reflect upon the complexities of our universe.

About Lorraine Cleary Dale

View Profile »

“I look to nature for my inspiration. I acknowledge life cycles, degeneration, and the mystery of life returning. I am fascinated with the notion that genes can retain ‘memory’ when passed along to the next generation. Through the process of painting, I work intuitively as I explore a variety of techniques. These include layering, scratching into the surface, over painting, and use of transparency, in order to create the patterns and forms that emerge from a discovery of appropriation and repetition. I also employ symbols found in ancient runes; alphabetical marks representing a method of divination, my cultural identity, and my connection to mysticism.” Lorraine Cleary Dale is the Armory’s Director of Education.
