Lisa Kereszi’s photographs reveal magnificence in the derelict and find beauty in what the artist calls “the left behind.” On the surface, works from the series “The Party’s Over” show neglected places that are distinctly devoid of their usual human inhabitants, or, as the artist says, “A poetic investigation of faded fantasy”. Kereszi’s keen eye and skillful manipulation of composition, however, endow the images with an otherworldly aura, giving abandoned places a transcendent quality. As one reviewer described, images such as Window with Bird Droppings are contradictory; each grand and happy sight contains within it its own eventual destruction. In this work, the artist has captured the inside of an Italian villa; the lavender walls hint at the building’s resplendent past, while the broken windows and bird droppings acknowledge the ruthlessness of time and neglect.
