Kota Ezawa (b.1969, Cologne, Germany) began his studies at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf before completing a BFA at SFAI and his MFA at Standford University. Ezawa’s work has been showcased in solo exhibitions at the Hayward Gallery, London; Artpace, San Antonio, TX; Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford, CT; Madison Square Park, New York; Vancouver Art Gallery, Canada; and group exhibitions at the Hirshhorn Museum, Washington, D.C.; the Whitney Museum, New York; SFMOMA; Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh, PA; the Smithsonian, Washington, D.C.; MOCA, Chicago; Minneapolis Institute of Art; Queensland Art Gallery, South Brisbane, Australia and Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris.

He received a SECA Art Award in 2006 and a Eureka Fellowship in 2010. Ezawa’s work has been acquired institutions including the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, NY; Berkeley Art Museum; MOMA, New York; the Met, New York; and the Art Institute of Chicago. For more information, contact

Kota Ezawa (German, b. 1969) is an artist who draws upon art historical and pop culture images, recontextualizing them in her videos, projections, collages, and works on paper. Of her “remakes," Ezawa has said “it is more interesting to look at something you know than to look at something you don’t know.” The artist studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, Germany and the San Francisco Art Institute, receiving her MFA in 2003 from Stanford University.
