A kinetic paracinematic device. The projector reanimates the wings inside the glass. Paracinema is one word for the ecologies that weave in and around the idea of cinema and all the imaginative and practical machines that contribute to focusing our attention upon these phenomena of lights and shadows on surfaces. An animate cinema system that is aligned with the tradition of Expanded Cinema. My performances and installations use and open up some ecologies of the detritus and obsolescences of the cinematic apparatus, recycling and recuperating. Piles and arrangements of near-working pieces of equipment and objects found in field research make the assortment of my "paranaturalist systems" I use to explore the paracinematic and the material histories of home cinema.

About Keith Evans

View Profile »

Keith Evans is an artist and activist that has been working and performing in the Bay Area for 25 years. He makes a living as an art presentation technician, preparator and exhibition designer as well as a trained massage therapist. He was a volunteer care provider at Maitri Hospice in San Francisco and had the honor of taking Oakland youth on backpacking excursions into the alpine Wilderness in the California Sierras.

Collaboration and co-creation has been a core element of his own artistic practice having founded the experimental cinematic trio silt in 1989 as well as participating in many duos, groups and ensembles including most currently with Thingamajigs performance group.

He creates artwork in a cross-media array; Using language, graphics, book arts, installation, kinetic sculpture, dance, film, video and sound, primarily for performance or with an expanded idea of performativity.

His artworks are translation systems, fascination devices, extra-cinematic experiences that reveal the phenomenon and the idea of cinema as an ecology and system, one that is unfixed and accreting, neither nostalgic nor utopian.

His work is concerned with the ephemeral and interpretive, the continuums of perception and materiality, drawing attention to our connection with the earth. His heart reaches out to be an ally to what is wild, interrogating the blurred spaces, those cultural zones of collaboration, participation and translation that are the most determined by language and yet, the most free to query our direct experiences.

His work has been presented in galleries museums and cinemas all over the world including Asia, Europe, Australia and North America. Selections include NYMOMA, SFMOMA, LACMA and Whitney Biennial 2002.

He lives in Bolinas with his wife and 5 year old son.
