John Bisbee has used nails of all sizes, from small brads to large spikes, as his only medium for decades, transforming them on his forge into staggering works of the imagination. Midsize American Grid comes from a recent series responding to America’s current political and cultural climate, which will be exhibited as part of his major solo exhibition, American Steel, at CMCA in Summer 2018.

John Bisbee (American, b. 1965) received his BFA from Alfred University and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. One of Maine’s most distinguished contemporary artists, he has had solo shows at Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Shelburne Museum, and Portland Museum of Art. In 2012, he was one of five artists featured in CMCA’s 60th Anniversary Honors Exhibition. He has been awarded a Joan Mitchell Foundation grant and residencies at Yaddo and MacDowell Colony. He lives in Brunswick, Maine.
