Ellison's paintings take inspiration from music, movement, and language, creative processes that make their mark through space, which the artist represents in her work as patterns, lines, shapes, and colors. Often she works in a series, trying out variations on a theme or a thought, building layers over a period of time, similar to how the printmaking process allows for multiple plates, editions, and processes. Open the Floodgates is part of her series titled, Adrift.
