The resulting images eschew the usual tropes of still photography about gay male sexuality; the explicit, frontal, trophy nudity of that genre is replaced by a cinematic and atmospheric approach that uses real locations and low light to create a mood that is nuanced and ambiguous, melancholic yet seductive, tense but intimate.

Hugo Fernandes (b. 1985) is a New York City-based visual artist. He is known for photographic work exploring intimacy and sexuality. He received his BFA in photography from the School of Visual Arts in New York City. Hugo’s photographs have been exhibited nationally and internationally including at Leslie Lohman Museum, BAXTER ST@Camera Club of New York, Jennifer Schwartz Gallery, Museum of New Art, Humble Arts, GLAAD, Aperture Gallery and Galleria San Ludovico. He was the recipient of a Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation Award and a School of Visual Arts scholarship.
