In the present lot, Schiano’s “totems” are both sculptures and vases. Each totem comprises three segments, which can be variously stacked to create different shapes and sizes. Schiano’s playful design shows his interest in the tenets of postmodernism, as well as the indigenous art of Africa and the Americas.

About Giovanni Schiano

View Profile »

Giovanni Schiano (Italian, b. 1976) is a sculptor, photographer and painter. He is heavily influenced by Ettore Sottsass and the Optical and Memphis art movements. Schiano’s works in different media are often extremely dissimilar and have unique influences. For example, his paintings are comprised primarily of earth-toned collage pieces with a painted overlay, while his sculptural “totems” are constructed using vibrantly colored geometric forms. Schiano’s works are exhibited in France, United States, Australia, England, Japan and Italy.
