Description

Upon breaking from his prolific portrayal of starlets and pop culture motifs in 1973, Laing returned reinvigorated to his favored medium of printmaking in 2007, after a three-decade hiatus. Laing’s rebound into art making focused on a revival of his 20th century style of reworking sourced images of famed individuals, particularly those of English heritage. In keeping with Laing’s Pop Art aesthetic and his investigation into society’s obsession over sex symbols and celebrity culture, “KM (Kate Moss)” places the famed beauty in a new light, stripping the image of a personalized identity and disrupting the highly sexualized portrait. Adding his own artistic references, humor, and cynicism he skillfully reimagines the public representation of British model Kate Moss.

About Gerald Laing

View Profile »

Gerald Ogilvie Laing (English, 1936-2011) was an English sculptor closely associated with the Pop Art movement. However, his practice saw various developments in which Laing experimented with minimalist sculpture, figurative sculpture, and, later, a return to Pop Art. Of his works, Liang’s series based on the atrocities of Abu Ghraib drew particular attention for their political statement. He was educated at Central Saint Martins in London.
