In my recent work, I have taken cues from the natural world and personal events to create a suite of paintings that act as abstract omens. In works such as Crocus and Nocturne, I continue my series of illusory woven oil paintings. Using specialized tools to extrude oil paint in thread-like marks, I work through a systematic process that gradually builds three-dimensional illusions of warp and weft. The process results in mysterious and surprising experiences of this traditional medium. In other works such as Uma, North, and South, raw and gilded linen are simply gathered or literally woven together to form textured and reflective geometric compositions that pare down and further probe the material possibilities of painting. Finally works, such as Equinox, fix the viewer in front of fluctuating chevron fields, created by the play of gilded surfaces, subtle color gradients, and a meticulously randomized approach to pattern. The combination of the process and approach to material culminate in abstract visual events rather than fixed painterly images, as the surface of each work shifts with the movement of the viewer and the changing light of the day.
