Started in 2010, Dan Colen’s “Flower Power” painting series aims to subvert the traditional conventions of paintings by employing unusual materials and methods. Here, both natural and artificial flowers, gathered from all over New York, are smeared and smashed onto a raw canvas—what remains are stains of colors and fragments of petals. In doing so, Colen bridges the gap between the represented and the representative, as well as the physical and metaphysical world.

About Dan Colen

View Profile »

Dan Colen (American, b. 1979) is an artist living and working in New York City. He is part of a group of New York artists that includes Ryan McGinley, Nate Lowman, and the late Dash Snow. He became known primarily for his painted sculptures inspired by popular culture and ephemera, as well as graffiti-inspired text paintings, which draw upon song lyrics and slogans.
