The colors in Brooke Nixon’s abstract paintings derive from astute observations of the natural world—birds in a tree, flowers in the garden, colored leaves in fall. The compositions build on grids of triangles that often cluster to form a double downward parallelogram shape similar to the fletching of a down-pointed arrow. Nixon uses these forms to move her compositions between flat hard-edged abstractions and the spatially complicated three-dimensional world of digital blocks. Every shape, border, intersection, or over-painted line is deeply precise and intended, and composed with the artist’s sensibility of color relationships.
