About Barry McGee

View Profile »

Barry McGee (American, b. 1966) is a San Francisco-based street artist. McGee rose to prominence in the 1980s among the tagging community for his works on the streets of San Francisco. Though trained professionally in painting and printmaking at the San Francisco Art Institute, McGee uses a visual vocabulary drawn from graffiti, comics, hobo art, and sign painting. McGee’s work often celebrates his San Francisco district of The Mission, but, also, calls to attention the harmful effects of capitalism, gentrification, and corporate control of public space. In 1999, he was chosen to participate in the Biennale de Lyon, France.
