Description

Ann Craven is a New York-based artist whose bold paintings are realized through observation, experiment, and chance; all in an effort to capture the constant and ever-changing nature of the moment just past. Captured in serial compositions catalogued meticulously by date, Craven’s subject matter catalogues the minute progress of birds, moons, and flowers in work that is minimalist while empathetic in its intimacy. One of Craven’s many moons, Moon (Cushing, 7-21-13, 11:30 PM), 2013 is crafted from thick blue and black strokes. Her strong, free movements evoke a dreamlike quality that mirrors a film still or a memory the viewer can’t quite grasp. The moons become a trace or documentation of Ann’s gaze on the world, and, through the work, the viewer is pleasurably reminded of theirs too.

Craven lives and works in New York. She has work in the permanent collection at The Museum of Modern Art, New York.
