About Alexander Calder

View Profile »

Alexander Calder (American, 1898-1976) revolutionized sculpture in the twentieth century. He has become renowned for his delicate, kinetic mobiles. Either propelled by motors or air currents, these fragile wire and metal sculptures effortlessly propel graphic, abstract forms into moving components. His later monumental structures, or “stabiles,” combine daring innovation and dynamism into massive arching steel planes.
