About Alex Katz

View Profile »

Alex Katz (American, b. 1927) is an American figurative artist, loosely associated with the Pop art movement. In particular, he is known for his portrait paintings of his wife, Ada. Katz studied at The Cooper Union in New York, and briefly transferred to the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Skowhegan, Maine. Katz has said that Skowhegan exposed him to painting from life, which became critical to his development as an artist. His work is defined by flatness of color, bold forms, and an economy of line.
