Through his self-portraits, Luke Smithers aims to challenge stereotypes of the modern society. Capturing himself in a range of guises and personas, the artist navigates through the constructs of identity and sexuality. His work draws on Collier Schorr’s blend of photographic realism and youthful fantasy, and Cindy Sherman’s socially critical photography. Here, Smithers provocatively defies the classic perception of a macho, Clint Eastwood-esque cowboy by questioning the performative platform of gender constructs and pointing to the arbitrary nature of identity.
