How It Works

We make collecting and selling at auction easy. Follow this basic guide or talk to one of our specialists, who can walk you through the process or answer any questions.

  • Collect On Paddle8

Paddle8 offers works by renowned artists and designers in dozens of auctions each month. Here is how to bid and collect on Paddle8.

To start collecting artworks from your favorite artists, become a Paddle8 member.

Become a MemberYou will keep the same user information for every sale on Paddle8.

After you’ve registered, bids can be submitted online at anytime for the duration of an auction. You will be asked to submit credit card details the first time you bid and this will be saved for subsequent bids. Most Paddle8 auctions last two weeks.

Use the features on our site to discover works by your favorite artists and designers in Paddle8’s auctions.

    • Search by artist name, artwork title or auction to discover works.

    • Browse through the extensive collection of artworks in current auctions.

    • Sign up to be notified when works by your favorite artists and designers become available.

    • If you see an artwork you want to keep track of, add it to your watch list to receive a notification shortly before the auction ends.

Enter any bid amount as long as it is greater than or equal to the low estimate (the amount noted below the bid field), and click on "place bid." If you do not have a credit card number on file you will be prompted to add it to secure your bid at this point. Your card will not be charged, it will be authorized for $1.00.

This will automatically place a bid at the next increment, and save any excess amount as a maximum bid.

    Additional Information

    • Absentee / Maximum Bidding

When you enter an amount higher than the minimum bid, the system treats this amount as your maximum bid. Entering a maximum bid does not necessarily mean you will pay that price. You may pay less. As the auction proceeds, we compare your bid to those of other bidders and the system automatically bids on your behalf, up to but never exceeding your maximum bid. We increase your bid by increments only as much as necessary to maintain your position as highest bidder. If your maximum bid no longer exceeds the current bid, you will receive an outbid notification email, and have the option to bid again.

    • Transfer to Live Auctions

Some Paddle8 auctions culminate in live auction events. If that is the case, your maximum bid will be transferred over to the live auction, or you can continue to bid online simultaneously with the live event. Because of the nature of a live auction, there may be different end times for lots within the same auction. End times will be clearly indicated below the bidding field.

    • Checkout

Paddle8 offers collectors a seamless checkout process, with payment, insurance, shipping and installation options available using a simple checkout link. In our benefit auctions, checkout links may or may not be sent out by email directly by Paddle8 depending on the nature of the partnership with our benefit clients. Some benefit organizations elect to process payments and arrange shipping directly with collectors.

    • Buyer's Premium & Additional Charges

In Paddle8’s benefit auctions, Buyer’s Premiums are generally not charged. If they are charged, this will be clearly noted above the bid field. In Paddle8’s monthly and themed auctions, winning bidders are charged a 20% Buyer's Premium on top of the hammer price. A summary of all charges is provided prior to confirmation of the transaction. The summary outlines the total price realized (Hammer Price + Buyer's Premium) along with any applicable taxes.

    • Receiving Your Property

If you are the winning bidder, upon the close of our auction you will receive an email from Paddle8 prompting you to check out. Checking out allows you to pay for your artwork. You will also be presented with options and rates to arrange shipping. For some benefit auctions, you will be contacted by the organization that held the auction to arrange for checkout. Our standard shipping timeline (from payment for lot and shipping fees to final delivery) is 3 to 4 weeks for shipments within the continental United States or domestic UK, and 6 to 8 weeks for all other shipments. Please note: Buyers are responsible for all shipping costs.

    • Shipping Options

For Paddle8 auctions and benefit auctions where Paddle8 handles fulfillment, we offer two checkout options.

      • Select one of our preferred fine art shipping partners to manage packing, collection, and delivery door to door (and installation if you require).
      • Coordinate off-line with Paddle8 to arrange FedEx shipping, or arrange to pick up your artwork from the benefit organization directly, if applicable.

    • Insurance

Paddle8 offers a blanket insurance policy.

    • Taxes

All sales with a final delivery address in New York State, Delaware, or California are subject to state sales tax. International shipments are subject to duty and tax as determined by the customs of the importing country. The purchaser will pay any fees directly upon receipt of your shipment.

  • Sell On Paddle8

Paddle8 is always interested in consignments, from contemporary prints to extraordinary design. Follow this guide to consign your fine art and collectibles at a Paddle8 auction. Consign

Paddle8's team of specialists has decades of combined experience at Christie's, Sotheby's, Phillips, Gagosian, Pace, and other leading auction houses and galleries. We have experts in fields from contemporary art to design.

    Request an Auction Estimate

Paddle8's specialist team provides estimates of auction value free of charge. Please fill out our consignment form.

    Consign Property

We’ll work with you to agree upon sales terms, including the estimate and the reserve (the price at which you are prepared to sell your property). Once all of the sale requirements are worked out, our specialists will send you a contract recording those details.

    Consignment Terms and Costs

For every lot, Paddle8 charges the seller a vendor's commission which is a percentage of the sale price. Rarely, a work may need to travel to our premises for a condition report or re-photographing. Costs associated with this process, like insurance and photography fees, will be charged to the consignor. Please note Paddle8 will not take consignment of works previously purchased in Paddle8 Benefit Auctions for a minimum one calendar year after the date of purchase.

    Select an Auction

Our specialists will then discuss with you the most suitable auction date and theme to ensure the strongest bidding for your property. Our online platform means works can be offered for sale with short notice.

    Transporting Your Property

The online nature of Paddle8 means that your property will remain in your hands until it sells, after which Paddle8 will arrange for it to be sent to the winning bidder.

    Receiving Payment

After the auction, Paddle8 will notify the seller about the status of each lot offered for sale. Once payment has been received from the buyer, we will pay net sale proceeds (the hammer price minus the vendor's commission and sale-related expenses) to the seller within 30 business days of payment being received.
