Thomas Galbraith joins Paddle8 as Managing Director, Auctions

Galbraith's appointment coincides with Paddle8's expansion into niche collecting areas from fine jewelry to eclectic design. Paddle8's inaugural sale of art and design, California: Light and Spaces, launches July 24.

Online auction house Paddle8 is pleased to announce the appointment of Thomas Galbraith as Managing Director, Auctions. Galbraith will be responsible for Paddle8's worldwide sales of art, design, and collectibles, all of which are curated along thematic lines. He will oversee a team of specialists based in New York, Los Angeles, and London.

Galbraith joins Paddle8 from the German online company artnet AG, where he most recently held the position of Director of Global Strategy; prior to that, he served as artnet's Director of Analytics. While at artnet, Galbraith created an innovative art-indexing product that drew on the company's extensive database of auction results. He previously held positions at The Art Loss Register, AIG Private Client Group, and AXA Art Insurance Corporation, among others. Galbraith received his MA in Art History from the University of St. Andrews, Scotland.

"Thomas brings over ten years of experience in the art-market landscape," says Paddle8 co-founder Alexander Gilkes. "He is a stellar addition to our team, leading a growing group of specialists with experience at the likes of Gagosian, Christie's, Phillips, and Sotheby's to solidify Paddle8's position as the leading online auction house."

In June, Paddle8 announced $6MM of new funding from investors including luxury investment firm Mousse Partners, venture capital fund Founder Collective, artist Damien Hirst, the Mellon family, art dealer Jay Jopling, Alexander Von Furstenberg, and Redline Capital Management, experienced investors in e-commerce and media. Redline is combining its investment in Paddle8 with its planned exit from artnet, which has allowed Paddle8 to acquire an option to purchase from Redline a stake in artnet.

With the new capital, Paddle8 will expand beyond fine art to sales of collectibles ranging from design to jewelry to fashion. Paddle8's first auction to incorporate design lots, California: Light and Spaces, will be held online from July 24 through August 7. The sale will include works by California luminaries including Tony Duquette, William "Billy" Haines, Ed Ruscha, and John Baldessari.
