Dave Harper joins Paddle8 as Director, Special Projects & Client Development
Online auction house Paddle8 is pleased to announce the appointment of Dave Harper as Director, Special Projects and Client Development.
Harper joins Paddle8 from the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), where for the past six years he served as BAM's inaugural curator of visual art (BAMart). While at BAM, Harper organized over two-dozen exhibitions featuring more than 150 artists. He spearheaded the creation of three benefit portfolios with the work of 35 artists, from Candida Hofer and Louise Lawler to Alex Da Corte and Sam Moyer, and oversaw the creation of editions with Marcel Dzama and Deborah Kass, among other artists. In 2012, Harper launched BAM's first public art program.
Harper organized seven BAMart silent auctions, which raised nearly $2M for the institution. Earlier this year, BAMart partnered with Paddle8 to present its auction online for the first time, opening the benefit to Paddle8's global collector community. The auction raised $340,000 through Paddle8, over 30% more than the sale's fundraising goal.
"Dave brings a rich network of relationships with artists, curators, and cultural institutions, as well as on-the-ground experience creating innovative development models that support the growth and success of non-profits," said Osman Kahn, founding partner and COO of Paddle8.
Paddle8 has partnered with more than 150 non-profit organizations worldwide to dramatically expand the audience and results of their benefit auctions through an online platform. Non-profit partners include the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), the Royal Academy, the Palais de Tokyo, and the Art Production Fund.
In June, Paddle8 announced $6MM of new funding from investors including luxury investment firm Mousse Partners, venture capital fund Founder Collective, artist Damien Hirst, the Mellon family, art dealer Jay Jopling, Alexander Von Furstenberg, and Redline Capital Management. With the new capital, Paddle8 will expand beyond fine art to sales of collectibles ranging from design to jewelry to fashion. Paddle8 recently opened an L.A. office and will open in London in the fall.
Paddle8 is the online auction house, connecting buyers and sellers of fine art and collectibles across the Internet. Paddle8 presents two types of auctions: monthly themed auctions, and benefit auctions in collaboration with non-profits. Founded by Alexander Gilkes, an auctioneer and LVMH veteran, and Aditya Julka, a Harvard Business School MBA and serial entrepreneur, Paddle8 eases the sale and acquisition of art and collectibles via a fully online auction model, offering the lowest available commissions, no public sales records, and extended auction visibility and timelines, enhanced by educational content, in addition to automated post-sale services.
