The 8: Robert Wilson

What is your line of work?

I am a visual artist working in theater. I never studied theater and if I had I probably would not do what I am doing now. I am interested in design and architecture.

If you were a work of art, which one would you choose?

I would like to be the drip of milk in a Vermeer painting, the vertical line in a Barnet Newman painting, the note that goes out on a string in a Mozart piano sonata.

What is your earliest memory of art?

I grew up in Waco, Texas. It was not a place for the arts. My uncle gave me a chair when I was very young as a birthday present. It never occurred to me to sit on it. It was just so beautiful to look at.

Which museum or foundation would you like to be locked in one night?

The Menil Collection in Houston. Dominique de Menil said at the opening that she hopes that the museum "will blow your mind."

"Davide is one of the finest young artists that I have encountered. His work is a mystery to me. We work as artists to ask questions, not to say what something is. He opens our eyes to see what we have not seen before. His works of art are infused with light. This light creates the space to see the essential. "
