Paddle8 Outtakes | Memorial Day

Whether you’re enjoying this Memorial Day weekend honoring the brave soldiers lost during military service in the various parades throughout New York City in Brooklyn and Queens, celebrating the beginning of summer by visiting Paddle8 favorite destination Rockaway Taco or Veggie Island seen in Brooklyn tour, or just spending time with close friends and family at home, here at Paddle8, we put together a few of our favorite pieces from our site and blog, and other artworks related to the rich discussions regarding battles and wars.

Included in our exhibition, Taking Sides, curated by Zak and Robin Williams, is Determination Has Its Rewards, by Aaron Young.  In this composition, Young investigates the intricate and detailed way in which an American flag is folded.  He describes in his dossier how “ritual and regulations is absolutely mandatory when it comes to operating a military institution.”

Contributing to our blog, artist Matthew Porter offers us insights in artworks reflected through movie star and activist Jane Fonda.  In his exhibition with partner gallery Invisible-Exports, Porter highlights moments from Fonda’s biography that have inspired his recent works.

And always inspiring is the iconic Bed-In for Peace, performed by John Lennon and Yoko Ono in 1969 and remembering to “give peace a chance”.  Featured in a previous blog post and on our Tumblr page, the famous couple stayed in bed for two weeks as an act of non-violent protest to war and violence.

From everyone at Paddle8, we hope you have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend!
