With dynamic selections from 300 of the brightest faces including the likes of Liz Magic Laser, Erica Baum, Spencer Tunick, Rebecca Saylor Sack, and Jordan Wolfson, Paddle8 is pleased to present an online auction of artworks coming from the non-profit artists’ workshop Recess. Helping define New York City arts, this year’s benefit auction, Three’s a Crowd, continues to exemplify Recess’ mission of creating rigorous artwork for an active public. All proceeds will go to support future programming and projects at the organization.
Marking three years of ambitious artist projects, including Recess’ signature program Session, which invites artists to use their storefront space to realize long-term projects, and taking advantage of the organization’s built in audience, this years’ benefit will have works available for live bidding on Paddle8 ending May 30th, followed by a live silent auction at the Salon at the Tribeca Grand Hotel.
Over the past year, Recess has doubled their number of artist projects, launching a new online residency program, and have also extended their programming out of NYC for the first time at Paddle8 partner artfair NADA Miami Beach. They have also branched out creating a Critical Writing Series in parallel to their well-known Session series.
With storefronts in both SoHo and Red Hook, recent programs from Recess include Christine Sun Kim’s Feedback: VVAVE FM, where Kim, who has been deaf since birth, initiated a live and continuous 72-hour radio and internet broadcast as the third event in Feedback, her six-part Session at Recess. Kim performs distinct auditory investigations that initiate a crossing between audio and visual content, and she has collaborated with John Andrew and Aliza Simons who have built a radio tower and transmitter inside Recess, which extends the architecture beyond its physical presence into broadcasted space! Also recently seen at Recess is Dark Nights of the Universe, a four-night theoretical exploration of mysticism in dialogue with Du noir univers – a text by Francois Laruelle in conjunction with the Public School New York.
