Happening | Rhizome Benefit

Rhizome is an organization dedicated to the creation, presentation, preservation, and critique of emerging artistic practices that engage technology. Many of Rhizome’s programs take place online and include commissions, events, exhibitions and portfolios.

Rhizome is best known for its Rhizome Commissions program, which supports emerging artists by providing grants for the creation of significant works of new media art. This year’s commissions will be placing a specific focus on projects that address social issues and/or promote individual advancement through education or participation. Rhizome will be awarding ten grants this year!

The Rhizome Benefit is taking place this evening at 7pm at the New Museum at 235 Bowery. The event will include a DJ set by Venus X and an afterparty featuring Extreme Animals and LE1F.

DJ Venus X, who was recently featured in the NY Times , is known for her singular style and is often demanded to perform at high-profile art events worldwide. She’s raw, playing with an truly unique and eclectic style, and is often described as both a party promoter and DJ who is guaranteed to make you move on the dance floor!

LE1F is a New York-based rapper known for subverting mainstream rap with his queer hip-hop beats and highly performative presence that keeps the audience continually engaged and always thinking. His latest mixtape, Dark York, features irresistible dance beats that often tease his audience with a restrained flow that keeps the crowd wanting more.

Extreme Animals are a metal and trance group from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. They use a combination of noise, dance music, and performance art at their shows and are greatly influenced by 90s trance anthems.

The auction features works by Cory Arcangel, Sam Falls, Desiree Holman, Jenny Holzer, Lisa Oppenheim, Trevor Paglen, Sarah Rara, Mungo Thomson, and Clement Valla. Check out the auction on Paddle 8 here and you can still purchase tickets to the event here.

Bottom line: you won’t want to miss these exciting performances or available works at tonight’s benefit and after-party! Both VenusX and LE1F do sometimes play other shows in New York – but they are currently in very high demand. Fans had the chance to see them both when they played the same event last Friday, May 4 in Gowanus, Brooklyn at the inaugural Dirtywerk Party, organized by the newly formed electronic duo Malaria, artist Rin Johnson, and Joanna Cohen.
