Spotlight | Whitestone Gallery & Galerie Sho Contemporary

As part of their Paddle8 Armory preview, the Tokyo based Galerie Sho Contemporary has featured four of Helmut Newton’s “Domestic Nudes”. Shot in 1992, the series is emblematic of Newton’s provocative style of portraiture. The selection by Galerie Sho shows shoe-clad but otherwise nude women posing in various locations. Newton shot many of the “Domestic Nudes” at the famed Chateau Marmont where he frequently stayed.

Since 1967, Whitestone Gallery has largely exhibited Post Impressionist Japanese artists. Featured in the preview are abstracted paintings by artists, Kazuo Shiraga, Atsuko Tanaka and Sadamasa Motonaga. Kazuo Shiraga is well known for his action paintings where he painted using his feet and launched himself into wet clay. All three artists were prominent members of the Gutai Group and were among the first to carry out “happenings”. The work by the Gutai artists during the 1950s anticipated later Conceptual art, Happenings and the Fluxus movement outside of Japan.
