Johns, who is best known for his painting Flag (1954 – 55), described this work as having been conceived during a dream of the American flag. His interest in classical American iconography can be understood in the variety of symbols, shapes, and colors he compiled together in his most famous work. Just last year, in recognition for his contribution to the arts, President Obama presented Johns with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, becoming the first painter or sculptor to receive the honor since Alexander Calder.
