Nico Vascellari’s Cuckoo, staged from November 28, 2006 – January 28, 2007 at the Viafarini DOCVA contextualized this agent provocateur amongst the forefront of the mixed-media avant-garde using a slathering of source materials and utilities both tangible and intangible from clothes, amplification, wool, light, origin, ritual, scripture, icon, percussion, earth, uniform, spirituality, and burnished branches to recreate a performative recreation of an Alpine procession representative of any sort of celebratory parade imaginable.
The performance fundamentally relates to the notion of fair and its accompanying intensity complete with Christian iconography and pagan references. In the same vein as such exhibitions as REVENGE (Bienale Internazionale d’Arte, Venice, 2007), Untitled (mamoiada), MAN (Nuoro, 2007-2008) and Hymn (Manifesta, Rovereto, 2008), Cuckoo has placed Vascellari in conversation with artists from Jimmie Durham and Bruce Nauman to Gordon Matta-Clark and Robert Morris.
