Still-life opens the door for many conversations, exposing a lexicon of symbols containing coded messages of life and death, of religion and politics and of humanity and time. Stuff: Still Life Photography is in its final week, and for the next few days we will be focusing on some of the many symbols seen throughout traditional vanitas and memento mori paintings and carried into contemporary artwork.
Skulls reminded the viewer of the fixed life cycle, the ephemeral qualities of life and the inevitability of death.
